Outsourcing marketing for Canadian businesses: CASL, French and India

Canadian businesses face a few rules their US neighbours don't — stricter anti-spam law and, in Quebec, French-language requirements. Here's how to outsource your marketing to India without tripping over either.

Why Canadian businesses outsource to India

Overnight turnaround

India is 9.5 to 12.5 hours ahead of Canada depending on your province and the season, so work progresses while your team is offline.

One partner for many channels

SEO, Google and Meta Ads, social content and websites from one team, instead of juggling several freelancers.

Budget efficiency

Lower operating costs mean more of your budget goes into media and content.

How the time difference works

India runs on IST (UTC+5:30) all year, with no daylight saving. Here's how a 10am–7pm IST working day lines up with Canada:

Your location10am–7pm IST is your…Best way to work
Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal (EDT)12:30am – 9:30amCalls 8–9:30am; brief by end of day.
Calgary, Edmonton (MDT)10:30pm – 7:30am (prev. day)Evening calls your time.
Vancouver (PDT)9:30pm – 6:30am (prev. day)Evening calls; review in the morning.

Make it easy: one fixed weekly call at a time that suits both sides, a shared task board for every request, and a chat channel for quick questions. Nobody waits on a reply to keep working.

What your agency must get right in Canada

Good creative isn't enough on its own. Any agency working with Canadian businesses — local or offshore — needs to understand these:

CASL — Canada's anti-spam law

CASL is one of the strictest anti-spam laws in the world. You need consent before sending commercial emails or texts, plus clear identification and an unsubscribe option. Make sure your agency builds lists and forms with this in mind.

French language in Quebec

If you sell in Quebec, commercial content generally needs to be available in French, and French must be at least as prominent as other languages. Use a native French copywriter, not machine translation, and check current requirements.

Influencer disclosure

Canada's Competition Bureau and Ad Standards expect clear disclosure of paid or gifted influencer content.

The Canadian calendar

Canada Day (1 July), Canadian Thanksgiving (October, not November), Black Friday, Boxing Day and winter holidays. Seasonal weather also shifts buying behaviour more than in many markets.

How to start

  1. Keep ownership. Your ad accounts, analytics, domain and social profiles stay in your name; the agency is added as a user.
  2. Agree a written scope. Exact deliverables, revisions, reporting and notice period.
  3. Run a 60–90 day pilot with two or three measurable goals, such as qualified leads, cost per lead or rankings for specific keywords.
  4. Review honestly. Judge both results and how easy the team is to work with, then decide whether to scale.

Frequently asked questions

Does CASL apply if my agency is in India?

Yes. CASL applies to commercial messages sent to people in Canada, wherever the sender is based. Your agency should follow it on your behalf.

Can you create French content for Quebec?

Ask any agency who writes and reviews French copy. For customer-facing content, a native French speaker should write or review it.

Is Canadian Thanksgiving a big marketing moment?

It's earlier than the US holiday (second Monday of October) and is more of a family occasion than a shopping event, but Black Friday and Boxing Day are major sales periods in Canada.
